Types of Journal Articles

This guide is designed to summarize the different types of research articles published in the Behavioral and Social Sciences as discussed in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed. (2010). [Ready Ref BF 76.7 .P83 2010]

Within the scientific community, research results are shared through publication in the scientific journal. Therefore, it is important to understand the types of articles that are contained in the journals.  These articles are characterized by the following:  (see pp.9-10 of the Publication Manual)

  • present research that has not been published previously
  • are peer reviewed
  • can be retrieved for use in the future
