Fair Use
The Fair Use doctrine found in section 107 of the United States Code establishes that the reproduction of a work for purposes including criticism, comment, teaching, scholarship and research may be done so fairly when taking into consideration the following four factors:
- The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
- The nature of the copyrighted work
- The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
- The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work
MVCC Copyright Practices and Procedures
MVCC has established practices and procedures to affect compliance with copyright law. See the MVCC copyright policy tab for more assistance in determining if the use and duplication of copyrighted material falls under the doctrine of Fair Use. For use of materials that do not fall within the Fair Use provision, and for assistance in obtaining copyright permission, please contact the library as noted below.
Obtaining Permission
Do you need to obtain permission to use copyrighted resources? The library can provide you with assistance. The library will handle all correspondence with the copyright holder, and will pay any fees necessary to obtain permission.
