Notice About Copyright

The copyright law of the United States governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse or to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

The Details

ILL is for:

  • Current MVCC students
  • MVCC faculty/emeriti
  • MVCC staff

How long does ILL take?

  • 1-4 days for articles/book chapters
  • 1-2 weeks for books

Items you can't get through ILL:

  • Textbooks
  • Recently published books
  • Audio-visual material
  • Ebooks

Most ILL items are free of charge. If not, students are notified of the cost and given the opportunity to proceed with the request or to cancel it.

You will receive an e-mail message once the items arrive. For article requests, you will be emailed with instructions on how to retrieve the items. For book requests, the email will indicate the pickup location, which is the Circulation Desk of either the Utica main library or the Rome campus library.

Most items you borrow through ILL can be renewed. However, because the MVCC Library does not own these items, we have to request permission from the lending libraries. Renewals are not guaranteed and due date extensions will vary from library to library. You will be notified via email about the status of your renewal requests, though if we do not hear back from the lending library then you will need to honor the original due date.
You can sign into your ILLiad account at any time to view your checked out items, their due dates, and to request renewals.  You may also call our ILL office at 315-792-5669 or email us at mvccill@mvcc.edu to request a renewal.
Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy to users by MVCC Library. Failure to receive notices does not exempt the user from paying replacement or processing fees. When materials are borrowed, a date due is provided. If a borrower fails to return library materials, collection costs are passed on to the user. Students may have a hold placed on their student account. Once overdue fees are accrued on a user's account, their library account may be blocked until fees are paid in full. All library users are billed for damaged or lost materials.
MVCC Libraries have a number of textbooks available to borrow through our Reserve service. If the textbook you're requesting is on Reserve, then we cannot borrow a copy for you from another library because reserve materials are short-term loans, meaning we consider them to be readily available. This is different from our other circulating items which are checked out for much longer periods of time.
The newest editions of textbooks are often difficult to borrow through interlibrary loan. Many libraries won't let other libraries borrow their textbooks because they also have them on reserve for their students. In other cases, the books are so popular that they are simply checked out.

Interlibrary Loan Policy for Mohawk Valley Community College

Interlibrary loan service provides materials for the study and research needs of the college community by obtaining from other libraries needed items that are not available at MVCC libraries. Faculty, staff, and students who are registered for the current term may use the service. There are no fees charged to users for this service.

The following materials cannot be borrowed or lent through Interlibrary Loan:

  • Textbooks known to be required texts for MVCC courses
  • E-books
  • Entire volumes of periodicals
  • Non-circulating items (Reference, Archives, etc.)
  • Media items (DVDs, CDs, etc.)

Library users request items by providing the full citation in an online request form.  Users are notified when a requested item has been received or if the item is not available through interlibrary loan. Upon presentation of proper identification, users may pick up books at the library circulation desk. Articles are delivered electronically and may be downloaded or printed for personal use, as governed by copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code).

The lending library determines the loan period for requested items. The lending library has the right to recall loans at any time or to deny a renewal.

Borrowers will be charged a replacement fee for items which are not returned or that are returned damaged. A hold will be placed on an individual’s account and interlibrary loan services will be suspended until the items are returned or the fines are paid.
