Othello Questions from Professor Townsley

  1. Discuss some of the ways Othello deals with race issues. Begin by researching Elizabethan attitudes toward Africans/Moors in Shakespeare's time.  To what extent can characters' behaviors be attributed to race?

  1. Is Desdemona a strong feminist character? Why or why not? What attitudes toward women were common in Elizabethan England, when a strong female monarch ruled?

  1. We know that many of Shakespeare's plays were not entirely his own creation. Many times, he took already existing plays and rewrote them. Sometimes he was influenced by other writings.  What "source texts" may have contributed to the writing of Othello?

  1. Explain the significance of the duo setting of the play-- Venice and Cyprus. What does each location represent?

  1. Explain the possible significance of Othello's epileptic seizures. Here, too, you might want to research how epilepsy was viewed in Elizabethan England.

Suggested Library Databases

These databases provide the best results when searching for information about Shakespeare's plays (or any literature or humanities topic). For some reason, items from these databases are difficult to find in the library's main search. It is fastest and easiest to search the individual databases.
