Follow this guide step-by-step to locate a book on the shelf in the Utica Campus Library.

Welcome! This guide will show you step-by-step how to locate a book on the shelf in the Utica library.

Books in the library are arranged by subject, so that books about the same thing are usually shelved together.

However, the organization method that most college libraries use, Library of Congress Classification, is different from the methods used by bookstores or libraries. If you try to go to "the Psychology section" or "the fiction section" and just look around for what you want, like you might do in a public library or bookstore, you will be disappointed and frustrated.

Instead, start by trying to find a couple of specific books that look interesting in the library's online catalog. THEN locate those books on the shelf, and browse the shelves immediately around them.
