Database Searching Tips

The following research guides can help you find what you need quickly and easily. Still have questions about searching? Ask a librarian!

MVCC Library's Discovery Service

This box searches most of the library's resources: books, DVDs, streaming video, and articles from databases. It is a great place to start searching.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar Search

Google Scholar can be a great place to find scholarly articles. Increasing amounts of peer-reviewed research is being made freely available through Open Access journals. However, if you find an article through Google Scholar where the full text is not available for free, ask a librarian! We can get you free access to the article through our databases or interlibrary loan.

Subject-Specific Databases

Keywords

For best results while searching library databases or the catalog, remember to use only key words, rather than full sentences or phrases.

Yale University has a great list of search terms (these terms will also be helpful when searching for books).
